What Are The Stages Of Roof Replacement?

roofing problems

Roof replacement is the most common home improvement project and often accompanies other construction jobs. How long does it take? It’s a multi-step process and the time taken varies depending on the size and complexity of the roof. As a homeowner, you should have your roof inspected and if you notice problems, replace it. Here are seven stages of roof replacement.

1. Initial roof inspection

This stage is the most important part of a roof replacement project, as you might identify problems before they become too costly to repair or replace. As a homeowner, you can hire an inspector to take measurements of various structures and check your roof for leaks, missing shingles and other problems that could lead to water damage. The inspector can also look at the flashing and how well it keeps water out of your home. After inspections, you can determine whether it’s worth doing any repairs before proceeding with new materials.

2. Selecting roofing materials

You can choose various roofing materials and styles, including asphalt shingles, metal shingles, clay tiles, or slate tiles. Consider roofing materials that will be best for your home. For example, if you live in an area with harsh winters, an asphalt shingle roof may be best for you as it will help keep water from freezing in your home during winter. In case you live in an area with mild weather or no winter, consider a metal roof as it can withstand scorching sun or even hail storms without replacements. If you need help determining which type of material is best for your home, talk to your contractor about possible options and their advantages and disadvantages.

3. Remove the old roof

The third stage of roof replacement is the removal of your old roof. First, remove the existing shingles from the roof by cutting through the shingle with scissors or a utility knife. You or your contractor can replace them with new shingles by placing them over the existing ones, using small nails or screws to secure them.

4. Inspect wood decking

The next stage is the inspection of the wood decking. The inspector will check the wood quality and the condition of the nails and screws used in installing the decking. Also, look for missing boards, holes or cracks in boards, loose or broken nails or screws and loose or damaged planks. You can also inspect for any sign of water damage or termite infestation.

5. Get the roof surface ready

Get the roof surface ready for the new one. You can use a power or hand scrapper to remove any loose materials from the roof, such as shingles, nails and screws, before replacing them. Then, clean and sand the entire area to prepare for new asphalt or vinyl shingles.

6. Install new roofing

The next step is to install the new roofing. Contractors can place tar paper on top of the existing roofing material, then cover it with asphalt shingles or other roofing materials. If you’re replacing your roof with metal panels, you’ll also need to install flashing around them.

7. Clean up and final inspection

This stage is the last step in roof replacement. Contractors clean up the site, remove the old shingles, and ensure the roof is strong enough to support the new shingles. Also, inspect all flashing and other areas damaged by weather or leaks.
